Temple is a common term that players give to certain locations in the Ruins of Orr that are well-known for meta events that result in world event chests. Each location is marked on the map by a pale blue temple icon and includes an associated waypoint, Point of Interest, hero challenge, Karma Vendor, and statue. The temples are named after the Human Gods: Balthazar, Lyssa, Dwayna, Melandru and Grenth.

Access to services[edit]

Each temple area is affected by status of the local dynamic events. Many waypoints in Orr, including those within the temples, are initially contested, i.e. held by the forces of Zhaitan. This also means all statues of the corresponding god throughout Orr are corrupted by Zhaitan's influence, which can be seen as a green veil in the area near a statue; within the veil, players will suffer from an environmental effect that depends on the affected temple. Players can help the Pact to retake the temple by completing the local meta event; services, including the waypoint, are only available while the allies control the area.

Corruption effects[edit]

  • Balthazar's Rage: Fireballs rain down from the sky, creating AoE damage in the affected area. Allies hit also suffer 5 seconds of Burning. Risen are unaffected.
  • Lyssa's Frustration: The affected area is randomly hit by AoEs, applying Stun and Confusion to all allies.
  • Dwayna's Lament: Allies are affected by Dwayna's Lament, reducing their healing power.
  • Melandru's Sorrow: The statue emits a Point Blank AoE, damaging every ally within range every second. It deals moderate but rapid damage and inflicts 5 seconds of Cripple and Bleeding (3 stacks) with each pulse. A tangle of vines appear at the affected ally's feet with each pulse. Due to the high rate of damage, healing while downed is nearly impossible, although rallying is available.
  • Grenth's Touch: Allies are affected by Grenth's Touch, dealing ongoing damage. Risen are affected by a different version of Grenth's Touch that regenerates their health instead.

Walkthrough[edit]

You have Trahearne and a handful of allies that stay with you. You first go south and west, defeat foes, and the Avatar sends you to the east to defeat the keeper. While moving, you should generally use ranged weapons for the foes you see in your path to avoid over-aggro of other foes you see and popups you do not.

In order to summon the Avatar, when called upon to 'mimic the priests' you need to stand where the marker indicates.

The Keeper is not particularly dangerous but summons Shades regularly which will overwhelm your allies. If you have a lot of firepower just focus on the Keeper, otherwise you need to drag out the fight and defeat each Shade then re-focus on the Keeper.

Dialogue[edit]

Upon arriving at the entrance of the Cathedral:

Priestess Rhie: This temple must have been magnificent. It's painful to see it so ruined.
Pokka: Its foundations were shaken by the destruction of Orr, but it's still standing. Good work, that.
Priestess Rhie: Of course its foundations were good. That's where they put the tombs.
Trahearne: Lead the way, Commander.

Meeting Trahearne (cinematic):

Trahearne: Welcome, Commander. I've asked Priestess Rhie to join us. Her knowledge of the God of Death is unmatched.
Priestess Rhie: I never thought I'd be standing here! The Cathedral of Silence, the first temple of Grenth in Tyria. This is the Shrine of the Seven Reapers!
<Character name>: Who were the Seven Reapers? Priests of Grenth?
Priestess Rhie: Mortal heroes that fought beside Grenth when he defeated the god Dhuum and ascended to the throne of death. They became his avatars.
Priestess Rhie: I can still feel the altar's sanctity. The secrets you seek are here, but Orrian rites were very different. I may not be able to call the temple guardian.
Pokka: Don't worry. Where the faith ends, science begins. This is my VOED—that's Very Old Energy Detector to you non-geniuses.
Pokka: At this setting, it triggers old emotional resonance—visions of the past. When we get to the altar, we'll watch the image residue of the Orrians, and see what they did.
<Character name>: Excellent. Follow me, then, and we'll find that altar.

Talking with your allies:

Kozzak: I'm only here to record Master Pokk's[sic] achievements. Please don't get me in trouble.
Interning at the Statics College, eh? I remember those days.(if asura with College of Statics background)
It's an honor to work with the college's most famous alumni! I'm doing a thesis on your work!
Good luck, kid.
Don't worry, Kozzak. I'm sure you'll do fine.
I hope so! You have no idea the pressure I'm under. Literally—publish or PERISH!
Good luck, kid.
Pokka: Gods, spirits—pfaugh! Give me a good old-fashioned arcanoconverter and some widgets anyday!
Hello, fellow alumnus! Remember me, from the College of Statics?(if asura with College of Statics background)
So I do! Glad to see they've got some decent brainpower around here. That'll make my job easier.
Can I ask you another question?
Don't worry. Between the two of us, how can we possibly fail?
You don't believe in the Six Gods?
Of course not. I'm an asura! We believe in the Eternal Alchemy, the machine of the universe. We are all just cogs in the apparatus.
I see. But you're here anyway?
Of course! Even superstitions have some science in them. We'll find the source—me, and my VOED.
Hm. Can I ask you another question?
To each their own.
That gun you're carrying. What is it?
It's not a gun, it's a sensor! It'll find what we're looking for, just watch and see.
What does it sense?
It senses very old energy—relics, artifacts. It'll find the most powerful, oldest thing in here, and then the Priestess can..er..do her thing. I don't know. Dance around, or something.
Got it. Can you answer another question for me?
Good to know. Thanks.
You don't have to believe in something to make use of it. Come on.
Priestess Rhie: Bless you, <Character name>. This expedition marks the pinnacle of my hopes and dreams for the church. What an opportunity!
I hope Grenth will watch over us today, Priestess.(if human blessed by Grenth)
I'm certain he will <Character name>. You've always been one of his most devoted followers.
May I ask another question?
I'll be praying for our success. Thank you, Priestess.
It has been a while, Priestess. A pleasure to see you again.(if human and completed Speaker of the Dead)
You as well <Character name>. I've done a lot of praying since we opened those portals. I hope I'm ready for this!
Me, too. Can I ask you another question?
Faith will carry us through, Priestess.
What's the history of this temple?
This was Grenth's first temple in Tyria, raised when he defeated Dhuum and ascended godhood. Some of his greatest priests served here—Desmina, Mausollus.
Tell me about Dhuum.
Dhuum was a cruel and unjust god who ruled the Underworld. He refused to allow resurrections. In time Grenth overthrew Dhuum and imprisoned him in the Hall of Judgement.
So, Grenth was born a mortal, then? Not originally a god?
Grenth is Dwayna's son, but only half-god. His father was a mortal sculptor, but that is one of the greatest secrets of our church.
Tell me more about Grenth.(same as 'what's the history of this temple')
Very interesting. Can I ask you another question?
Fascinating. Thank you.
Who was Desmina?
Desmina was Grenth's first priestess. She asked for revenge on those who had wronged her—and he granted it, in exchange for her loyalty.
Tell me more about Grenth.(same as 'What's the history of this temple')
Very interesting. Can I ask another question?
Fascinating. Thank you.
Who was Mausollus?
A warrior-priest who carried the worship of Grenth from Arah into Elona. He crossed the sea that bore his name, and lived among the peoples of Vabbi and Istan.
Tell me more about Grenth.(same as 'what's the history of this temple')
Can I ask you another question?
Fascinating. Thank you, Priestess Rhie.
May I ask you another question?
Interesting. Thank you.
Have you ever been inside the Cathedral of Silence?
No priest of Grenth has set foot here since Orr was lost to the sea, hundreds of years ago. I'm so excited, I'm shaking!
May I ask you another question?
It's going to be very interesting, I'm sure.
I hope we find what we are looking for.
Trahearne: This temple is sacred, despite the corruption all around it. Fascinating.
Do you know much about Grenth and his Reapers?
Very little, actually. My specialty is Orr, not the human gods. Ask Priestess Rhie.
Can I ask you something else?
All right, Thanks.
How does this temple resist Zhaitan's corruption?
I do not believe it does—not entirely. But Grenth's power is akin to Zhaitan's, therefore, it may be he has more spiritual power to fight against the dragon.
Interesting. Can I ask another question?
Add that to our theories on how to defeat the dragons. It may come in handy.
What's our plan Trahearne? How will this help us find the source?
The ancient priests of Grenth kept Orr's deepest secrets. If we can make contact with an avatar, they may be able to tell us where we can find the source.
Tell me about the avatar.
It's a physical manifestation of a God—a spirit, sent by the diety[sic] to grant blessings or speak with its priests. I've never seen one, but I've heard about them.
Interesting. Can I ask another question?
It'll be a first for us both, then.
I'll keep a careful watch.

After securing the altar:

Pokka: We're ready. Kozzak, activate the VOED.
Priestess Rhie: Look! They're performing the ritual.

Talking to Trahearne:

Trahearne: I hope this works. It's our only chance to contact the avatar.
Priestess Rie will come through for us. She has to.'

The resonant images performing the ritual:

Keeper of the Shrine: The charr are at the doorstep of Orr. They plan to sear our nation as they did Ascalon.
Keeper of the Shrine:Vizier Khilbron says he can defeat them, but we must prepare for the worst.
Keeper of the Shrine: As Desmina did so many years ago, we shall call upon Grenth for his aid. If Orr dies, at least we will be with Him.
Keeper of the Shrine: Where is the god to whom I may give my undying devotion? Where is the god to Whom I may beg revenge against those who scorn me?

Duplicating the rite of Grenth:

Priestess Rhie: In order to commune with the altar, we should mimic them. Everyone, to your places.
Priestess Rhie: Where is the god to whom I may give my undying devotion? Where is the god to Whom I may beg revenge against those who scorn me?
Avatar of Grenth: Follow where I lead, come whence I call, and the corpses of the dead will be yours to control.
Wars

Talking to Trahearne:

Trahearne: Speak to the avatar. We must discover if he knows where the source is.
I'm on it.

Talking to the Reaper (cinematic):

Priestess Rhie: Hail, ancient one! Rise from your frozen tomb. I, your priestess, call upon you in the name of Grenth himself!
The Seventh Reaper: Who dares summon me? A true priest! Is there such a thing in this fallen land?
Priestess Rhie: I am Grenth's servant, and we have survived many dangers to speak with you, Please, hear us?
The Seventh Reaper: I see in your heart that you are no stranger to Death. Very well. I will hear you out, but in return you will kill in Grenth's name.
The Seventh Reaper: The keeper of this shrine has fallen to Zhaitan. Grenth wishes him returned, but I am too weak to perform the task. Destroy the keeper, and I will answer your questions.
Trahearne: Thank you, dark Reaper. We will do as you have asked.

After the cinematic:

Avatar of Grenth: Destroy the corruption. Return the soul of the keeper. Go.

Speaking with Priestess Rhie:

(Same dialogue as before but with a new option)
Tell me about the Seven Reapers of Grenth.
The Seven Reapers were mortal heroes who fought beside Grenth when he defeated Dhuum. He rewarded them by elevating them to become his immortal avatars.
Anything else about them?
They govern the various regions of the Underworld—the Labyrinth, Bone Pits, Chaos Planes, and so forth. But they have not been seen in human generations!
Can you tell which one we're dealing with here?
I'm not sure, but if I had to guess, I'd say he's likely the Reaper of the Ice Wastes, Grenth's most faithful Reaper. He'd never give up on the Cathedral—no matter what.
May I ask you another question?
That's good to know. Thank you.
May I ask you another question?
Thank you for the information, Priestess Rhie.

While fighting the Risen Keeper:

Risen Keeper of the Shrine: Zhaitan, not Grenth, is my master now.
Risen Keeper of the Shrine: The world will collapse around you!
Risen Keeper of the Shrine: I escaped Death once and I will do it again!
Risen Keeper of the Shrine: Destroy them! Destroy all those who do not bow to the dragon.
Risen Keeper of the Shrine:The Mists are filled with lies. Zhaitan is our only chance at immortality. Serve him!
Risen Keeper of the Shrine: I won't return to the Mists. I'm faithful to you, Zhaitan. Save me!

Speaking with the Seventh Reaper (cinematic):

Priestess Rhie: We've done it! Praise Grenth.
Pokka: Praise the Eternal Alchemy, you mean. It was my device that summoned that creepy guy in the first place.
Trahearne: We've fulfilled our part of the bargain, Reaper. Will you honor yours?
The Seventh Reaper: So shall it be. You seek the heart of Orr? Then you must go to the very beginning. The rock where the gods first set foot upon this world.
The Seventh Reaper: There is an artesian well hidden in the mountains behind the temple of Melandru. There, you will find the place where Orr began.
<Character name>: Thank you. We'll go there and cleanse this land of the dragon's corruption. Orr will once again be free.
The Seventh Reaper: Let it be so. I will see you again, heroes.. in every swing of your enemy's blade, I will be there.

Speaking with Trahearne:

Trahearne: The place where the Six Gods first walked upon Tyria. I never dreamed I'd see it, yet now we know it is the end of our great journey.
Your Wyld Hunt is nearly complete, my friend. How do you feel?
To be honest, terrified. What will we find there? What if we fail? So many things could go wrong.
This is the moment of destiny, Trahearne. We'll face it together.
You have always been such a good friend, <Character name>. Thank you.
You're welcome, Trahearne. Can I ask another question?
I'm glad to be here, my friend.
Where the gods first walked? What does that mean?
Human myth says that when the Six Gods came to Tyria, they built the city of Arah. The 'source' must be the place where they first set foot on Tyria.
I don't believe in 'gods,' but whatever these creatures were, they were powerful. The source must be equally so.(if charr)
A place so powerful that it drew the attention of Gods from deep in the Mists? It must be amazing.(otherwise)
No matter what our personal beliefs, the source of Orr might be the only thing powerful enough to cleanse Orr. We must go there and see for ourselves.
Agreed. May I ask another question?
Yes. We must.
Victory will be ours, Trahearne. Orr will be cleansed at last!

My story[edit]

Within the Cathedral of Silence, we met with Grenth's avatar—the Seventh Reaper. It was too weakened to defend the temple from a powerful Risen, so we made an exchange: we defeated the Risen, and the Reaper gave us the information we were looking for. Apparently, there is an artesian well hidden beneath the moutain[sic] near Melandru's temple, the very spot where the gods first set foot upon Tyria. There, we'll find the source of Orr.
